A chain that never sees any lube creaks, and the longer it runs dry, the more it eats the sprockets.
We clean it and lube it. Then we set the slack to the manufacturer’s figure.
When the chain goes slack again soon after every adjustment, or the teeth on the rear sprocket have gone pointed, we change the whole kit, chain and sprockets together. How to lube it yourself and measure the slack, we’ve written up here.
